Block & brick paving

Traditional brick and block paving driveways, laid in classic Sussex patterns on a sub-base built to last.

This is what we do best. We lay driveways in the traditional Sussex style, using clay and brick pavers set in classic patterns such as herringbone and basketweave, finished with neat soldier-course edging. It is the look you see in front of the county's finest homes, and it only gets better with age.

Block and brick paving is durable, low maintenance, and available in a wide range of colours and laying patterns to suit anything from a period farmhouse to a new build. Clay pavers in particular hold their colour for decades rather than fading like cheaper concrete blocks.

Every driveway is finished with concrete edge restraints to keep it locked in place for years, laid over the same properly dug and drained sub-base we put under all our work.

  • Traditional clay and brick pavers, our signature finish
  • Classic patterns: herringbone, basketweave and running bond, with soldier-course edging
  • Colours that last for decades, especially in clay
  • Concrete edge restraints as standard
  • Any single paver can be lifted and replaced if ever needed
  • Laid on a full compacted sub-base with proper drainage

Questions

Block & brick paving FAQs

How much does a block paving driveway cost?
The cost depends on the size in square metres, the type of paver, how much groundwork and drainage is needed, and site access. We give you a clear fixed price after a free site visit, so you know exactly what you are paying before any work starts.
How long does a block paving driveway last?
Laid on a properly dug, drained and compacted sub-base, a block paving driveway comfortably lasts 20 years or more. Clay and brick pavers hold their colour for decades, and a single damaged paver can be lifted and replaced without redoing the drive.
What laying patterns can I choose?
Popular patterns include herringbone, basketweave and stretcher bond, finished with a soldier-course edge. Herringbone is the strongest and best for driveways because it locks the blocks together under the weight and turning of vehicles.
Do I need planning permission for a block paving driveway?
Usually not. If the driveway drains to a permeable area, a soakaway or a border rather than onto the road, it counts as permitted development and needs no permission. We design the drainage so this is not an issue.
How long does it take to install?
Most take around three to five days, depending on size and groundwork. That covers digging out, laying and compacting the sub-base, laying the blocks, adding edge restraints and brushing in the jointing sand.
