Natural & free-draining
Gravel driveways
A natural, elegant finish that suits period and country homes, laid properly so it stays put.
A gravel driveway gives you a natural, characterful finish that suits period homes, country properties and long entrances. It is one of the most cost-effective ways to smarten up the front of a house, and it drains freely, which helps with surface water.
Done well, a gravel driveway is far more than stones tipped on soil. We lay a proper edged, membraned and compacted base so the gravel stays put and does not sink into mud over time.
- A natural look that suits older and rural homes
- Free draining, which helps with standing water
- Cost-effective for larger areas
- Laid over a membrane and firm sub-base with defined edges so it stays where it should
- Gravel stabilisation grids available for slopes and busier drives
Questions
Gravel driveway FAQs
How much does a gravel driveway cost?
Gravel is usually the most cost-effective driveway surface, especially over larger areas. The price depends on the area, the depth and type of stone, the edging and the groundwork underneath. We give a fixed price after a free site visit.
Do gravel driveways need planning permission?
Gravel is naturally permeable, so a gravel driveway almost always counts as permitted development and needs no planning permission, because rain drains through it rather than running onto the road.
How do you stop gravel spreading or sinking into mud?
We lay a firm, compacted sub-base with a weed-suppressing membrane and defined edges, and set the gravel to the right depth so it stays where it should. For slopes or busy drives we can add a gravel stabilisation grid.
Is a gravel driveway good for Sussex weather and drainage?
Yes. Because gravel is free draining, it copes well with heavy rain and helps prevent the standing water you often get on solid surfaces. Laid over a proper base it stays firm and usable all year.
How much maintenance does a gravel driveway need?
Very little. An occasional rake to keep it level and a top-up of stone every few years is usually all it takes, making gravel one of the lowest maintenance driveway options.
